How to Mix Colors

Understanding the Color Wheel
( for subtractive color only )

Most of us have made a color wheel at some point in our lives, so rather than spending a lot of time relearning what we already know, let's just quickly review the major points.

  • In theory, all color can be created using primary colors.
  • Primary colors may be mixed together to make secondary colors.
  • When a primary color and a secondary color are combined, the mixture is a tertiary color or intermediate color.

  • A typical color wheel uses twelve colors as points of reference for the full spectrum of color. A more accurate representation of that spectrum is the color ring.
