Understanding the
Beauty of Right Sequence

In his Principles of Color (1), Faber Birren devotes a major portion of the book to something he calls The Beauty of Right Sequence. Using the color triangle he developed in 1937, he demonstrates that staight-line sequences result in harmony. According to Birren's theory, there are eight sequences that are "natural and concordant".
- pure color > tint > white
- pure color > shade > black
- tint > tone > shade
- tint > tone > black
- shade > tone > white
- pure color > white > black
- tint > shade > tone > gray
His
work with color forms is important in that it bridges the gap between
the concepts of color and the
concepts of value.
