The Museum Study Guide
.

When I first began surfing for art education resources, I began with what seemed to me to be the most logical place to look for great art: the websites of the great museums of the world. Many of the these great institutions offer attractive sites, but the majority are constructed as promotional pieces, describing rather than furthering their programs. Although self-promotion is integral to the success of an organization, for those of us who actually want to look at and study art, navigating countless pages only to find a reference here or a single piece is very frustrating.

The good news is that there are a few museums which have begun to harness the enormous power of the World Wide Web to develop outreach programs. The Museum Study Guide is my attempt to guide the casual art lover and beginning researcher to these sites in way that is both easy and visually appealing. The site is divided into four subsites:

  1. The Museums Around the World page takes you to the sites of some of the world's great museums. Many of the sites are offered in languages other than English. If you need help translating a language you don't speak, the AltaVista Translator is available through a link on the Art Resource page. It will do an OK job of giving you the gist of the text in question.

  2. The Museum Guide for Upstate S.C. page was designed to make the population of Upstate South Carolina aware of the wonderful cultural opportunities within just a few hours drive of their homes.

  3. Finally for those wanting to use the Internet for education, The Art Resources Page lists links to sites that specialize in providing such resources. This page is divided into the following subgroups of links: Special Tools, Art Appreciation, Art Education, Art Research, Stuff for Kids and a special Lagniappe of miscellaneous sites.

A few final notes to help you use the site more effectively.

You can access these pages in either of two ways: by following links through the site (ex. homepage >page 1>page 2>etc.), or by direct access (ex. typing in the address, accessing a bookmark, or clicking on a search engine link).

Clicking on the little SNN will bring up a page that explains how to view the Sparklenet sites the most effectively.
