- Hatcher
Garden and Woodland Preserve
- In 1969, Harold and Josephine Hatcher retired to Spartanburg
with the dream of creating a public greenspace for the Spartanburg
community. Community members joined as volunteers alongside
the Hatchers, providing labor as well as financial support for
the Garden's development. The result is what Garden visitors
experience today: 8 acres of greenspace in the center of the
city.

Hub City Writers Project
- In
May 1995, a group of writers in Spartanburg, S.C., began
to talk at a downtown coffee shop about how they could help
preserve a sense of place in their rapidly changing Southern
city. What their community needed, they said, was a literary
identity...

Lawson's Fork Creek Headwaters Project -
The Headwaters Environmental Arts Initiative is a community
arts project in Spartanburg, South Carolina, that celebrates
Lawson's Fork Creek. This initiative brings together writers,
scientists, artists, educators, musicians and many others
to focus attention on this beautiful, historic, though damaged,
natural resource."
- The
Spartanburg
Conservation Endowment, Inc. (SPACE)
is a land trust founded by citizens
concerned over the loss of green areas and open space in Spartanburg
County. Its purpose is to protect and preserve natural areas
of ecological, historical, and aesthetic value to enhance the
quality of life for all residents and future generations.
