Paris Nude.
circa 1929, Paris.
oil on linen.

Same model and pose as in painting below, ...but with a different vantage point.

By working monochromatically, the student was better able to focus on the effects of the light flowing over the masses of the body. It was also easier to develop the composition when color was not a factor.

Paris Nude.
circa 1929, Paris.
oil on canvasboard.

Today when an artist enters an exhibition, there is typically a requirement that the work being entered has been completed within two years prior to its entry.
This was not always the norm in the past however. Often Couper, as well as other artists of her time, exhibited work which had been completed many years earlier.
Although this work was painted around 1929 when she was studying in Paris under André Lhote, it was entered in the 35th Annual North Shore Arts Exhibition in Gloucester in 1957.
