By working
monochromatically, the student was better able to focus on the effects
of the light flowing over the masses of the body. It was also easier to
develop the composition when color was not a factor.

an artist enters an exhibition, there is typically a requirement that
the work being entered has been completed within two years prior to its
entry.
This was not always the norm in the past however. Often Couper, as well
as other artists of her time, exhibited work which had been completed
many years earlier.
Although this work was painted around 1929 when she was studying in Paris
under André Lhote, it was entered in the 35th Annual North Shore
Arts Exhibition in Gloucester in 1957.

paintings in 1942 while Couper was living in Tryon.
This work
has a phoenix logo on the back with a note about the family seal, which
was first used on a catalog by Couper in the Milch Gallery in New York
City.

This account
book from The Central National Bank in Spartanburg doubled as a notebook.
Inside are notes on Modernism from Couper’s classes with André
Lhote.
John Adger
Law, the brother of Couper’s friend, fellow artist and co-founder
of the Spartanburg Art Club, Margaret Law, was the president of the bank.

Besides
notes on her classes with André Lhote, the notebook also contains
a number of lists of works, where they were exhibited, who owned them,
and the owner’s addresses.
