Notes on Modernistic Painting
Class of André

Josephine Couper - Dec. 19, 1929

The greatest field for self expression. The model is posed as in other classes. Many colored draperies are used as back-ground.

“Some see it hot some see it cold” As you “see it” you put it down. In the Academic school if your color was not just right you were all wrong. In this school we start out apparently all wrong because each sees color in his own way.

Formerly we looked for angles because the form was all round. Today the form is round but we draw angles.

One person may desire to make only a harmonious pattern show (design) another a more realistic representation. Each if carefully studied is equally correct.

One must understand what the artist is trying to say before judgement is pronouced.

1 lesson he said I painted like Monet (I have tried to do so) Remarked that is “old school” out of fashion. I must paint new school.

Paint with all the feeling one has and then add intellect.
