from Seeing Spartanburg: A History in Images by Phillip N. Racine Montgomery Ward and S. H. Kress Co. were some of the major national department stores that marked downtown shopping in the 1960s. The Elite Restaurant had become the W.W. Cafeteria, perhaps indicating the beginning of the movement to fast food and faster living that were to mark the coming decades and change the physical character of the city. The people on the left of the photograph look as if they are charging across the street, probably intent on "making the light"-another indication of a changing lifestyle that would grow increasingly hectic.
